Elon Musk says SpaceX is adding two more sites to its Colossus 2 AI computing complex in Memphis. He calls them Gun Range and Spam.
Musk gave the update on X on Sunday, as Lauren Edmonds reported for Business Insider. He said the Spam site once housed Hormel products, and that the local police department once owned the Gun Range site.
“Gun Range is tracking to be operational by end of November and Spam in December,” Musk wrote.
He said he had walked the whole Colossus 2 site around midnight and again in the morning. He credited the SpaceX team and its contractors with good progress.
More compute for Grok
Musk built the first Colossus supercomputer in Memphis in 2024. xAI, now part of SpaceX, started on Colossus 2 last year to add computing power for Grok.
Musk said last week that SpaceX had raised $40bn in debt to buy AI chips. Its AI business overtook Starlink in revenue last quarter.
The turbine lawsuit
Residents near Memphis have packed public hearings, staged protests and created petitions against the two campuses, Business Insider reported.
In April, the NAACP sued xAI and its subsidiary MZX Tech. It says they run unpermitted methane gas turbines in Southaven, Mississippi, to power Colossus 2. Last week, a US district judge rejected their bid to dismiss the case.
