Anthropic buys 34bn of gas generators FT reports

Anthropic has agreed to pay $3.4bn for gas-fired generators to power its data centres, the Financial Times reported on Sunday. The FT said it is the biggest known single buy of power kit by an AI company.

The deal covers 1.7 gigawatts of large generators, the FT said, citing one person who knows about it. Anthropic signed it in late September with OnePWR Solutions, a power supplier in San Antonio, Texas. TNW has not independently confirmed the deal.

OnePWR had ordered the generators from Caterpillar about two years ago but needed money to complete the purchase, the FT reported. Anthropic first planned to buy power from OnePWR. Instead, it took over the orders, plus the work needed to install the machines.

Anthropic did not buy OnePWR itself, and none of its staff moved to Anthropic, according to the FT. It is not known where the generators will be used.

Both companies declined to comment to the FT. They also did not immediately respond to Bloomberg, which followed up the report.

The deal comes as Anthropic prepares for its stock market listing. Its amended IPO filing last week showed $895bn in commitments, almost all for computing power and infrastructure.

Other AI firms have also used gas to get data centres running fast. Elon Musk's xAI faces a lawsuit over gas turbines at its Memphis site.
