Microsoft will stop syncing OneDrive on older Windows 10 versions next month

TL;DR

Microsoft ends OneDrive sync support for pre-22H2 Windows 10 on August 15. No updates or patches after that. Windows 10 22H2 is supported until October 2028.

Microsoft will end OneDrive synchronisation support for Windows 10 versions before 22H2 on August 15. After that date, users on older builds will receive no more sync app updates, bug fixes, or security patches. The service itself will not immediately stop working, but Microsoft says “future functionality is not guaranteed.

Windows 10 22H2, the final version of Windows 10, will continue receiving OneDrive sync updates until October 10, 2028. Microsoft said the change “aligns OneDrive support with the Windows lifecycle policy and helps Microsoft focus ongoing investments on supported operating systems.” Microsoft 365 file synchronisation services will also be affected on older builds.

Users on pre-22H2 versions will need to either upgrade to Windows 10 22H2, move to Windows 11, or use OneDrive's web interface, which is less convenient than desktop sync. Microsoft has been tightening its Windows ecosystem throughout 2026, making AI features optional for some users while removing support for others. Alternatives like Nextcloud support Windows 10 back to version 1809 and also run on Linux. Nadella's restructuring of Microsoft is focused on AI-first products, and ending support for legacy configurations is part of consolidating resources around that direction.
